Sing Me a Song...

Contemporary Christian music is what I listen to most of the time. I have an XM radio at work where I listen to Channel 32 – The Message, all day long. In my car I listen to either that, XM 144- NASCAR radio, or the Braves. But, some of the songs played truly annoy me…there I said it! This morning I heard La Bible…..to the tune of La Bamba and then there is that Meshach song to the tune of Love Shack…..give me a break! But for the most part I am sure that it is better to feed my mind with lyrics like “Love one Another”, “Blessed Be the Name” or “Cry out to Jesus” than to hear “Highway to Hell”, “Save a Horse Ride a Cowboy” or “Gimme That”.

I am putting together the video for our Senior Sunday this week. I chose to use one Contemporary Christian song (again it is what I know). I was a little surprised when I talked to our youth minister and he did not know the Stephen Curtis Chapman song I had chosen but was very familiar with Nickelback’s song. I think I was happy and sad about that. I am happy that he is relevant to the group he is working with but sad when I think about the sheer joy and excitement I say among so many teens at the David Crowder/Third Day concert that I know our youth group is missing out on. Hopefully these attitudes are falling by the wayside with some of our other “traditional” thinking.

Anyway, I still enjoy music of all types, but just find myself preferring to hear things that build me up. I know that music is a direct link to the Soul; therefore I must handle with care what I feed myself.

Comments:
Contemporary Christian is my music of choice these days too! I gave up listening to Classic Rock because the words to most of them just aren't very appealing or uplifting along w/other reasons too. And then there's always Broadway Musical Soundtracks!!! :)

Nothing like having kids in the car to change your opinion of a cool song like "Fat bottom girls" by Queen.

If you are looking for cool kid music parents can enjoy too, check out the duet "Trout Fishing in America" my kids love em and I do to. Think Smothers brothers for elementary school kids.

We've been trying to introduce our congregation to Contemporary Christian Music more and more. Whenever a major act comes to Cleveland, we try to get a big group to go. We keep geeting more and more who are interested. The last one we saw was Nicole Nordeman and Casting Crowns.

A great time was had by all!

In the new issue of Relevant, Derek Webb says "A lot of the songs on christian radio are just outright misrepresentations of hte character of God."

He's so right, I still think its better than the alternative, but I find myself more and more listening to my ipod instead of the radio. Some of those songs are awful.

As with all music you must be careful, but praise God that musicans are trying. I rarely listen to regular radio unless it's talk. But we listen to A BUNCHO CDS.

I remember the days when I wouldn't consider taking a job outside the listening area of our great KLTY Christian music station. Since then it has become more money driven (advertising) and a lot of the music is not the quality it used to be. I hardly listen to it anymore. Having a cd player in the car may be the biggest reason for that but I got tired of all the commercials. Maybe the XM radio is better.

Donna, As a former youth minister who loves music I used to use a lot of music to teach. Peter Gabriel was one of my favorites (Don't Give Up). But I was lucky enough to work with Elder's that let me take kids to concerts and sometimes went themselves. Best teaching CCM writers, Steve Taylor (Cash Cow, Principled Man etc.), Derek Webb (I am a whore I do confess, I put you on just like a wedding dress and run down the isle), SC2, Rich Mullins. Speaking of Rich I took a youth minister friend of mine who was raised that rock and roll was okay to listen to but put christian words with music and your going to hell. Here's a post on it from September:

Donna, I too found myself disappointed that our new youth minister wasn't very familiar with contemporary Christian.

I rely rather heavily on my Christian CD's to help me keep my thoughts (that help make my decisions throughout the day) where they should be. I love the blended notes of Acappella, the heavy bass beat of TobyMac, and the twang of Candy Christmas, among others. There is something to suit my every mood.

But that was something as a teen that I adored about my best friend's church (not a COC) was that when you walked into their teen room, you were hit with contemporary Christian music loud and clear. And all their youth group knew all the words. And y'know what? They had more teens that appeared to be going about the Father's business than any other church around. Hmmm . . .
But music speaks to me clearer than any other medium. I guess I'm expecting it to do the same for others . . .

Oh - hmmm.. I guess Air1 doesn't have Meshach and La Bible on their play list; if they do, I've missed it! I had wondered about XM - if it was any good. You're better than me though - as I'm sure my ADD auditory assessment will prove next week, there's no possible way I could listen to a RACE or baseball on radio. Glad I wasn't born before TV!

I'm with your iPod person. I listen to Air1 in the car; I have to while I'm driving. I need that CONSTANT reminder of God's presence in traffic or I might kill some stupid driver. hehe But at night, after everyone has gone to bed - I stick those headphones on, crank it up and listen to my extensive mp3 collection of various Christian music - from a cappella stuff to Toby Mac.
