What it is...

Some guys I know have gotten into a habit of saying the following phrase..

"It is what it is"

Now I am not sure exactly what they mean. Do you have an interpretation?

OK they are NASCAR guys but play along anyway....

Comments:
Hmmm that sounds like a familar problem....

I'll take a stab at it..."Man Rules?" You can't interpret them, they are just assumed and understood by one gender-guess which one?

It is a way of saying, "I didn't really mean to spin those two guys out and win that race. NO, I was just trying to be helpful!"

Yeah, right.

There is a sports-talk radio station in Detroit (WDFN), and they heard that phrase so often from athletes that they started a talk show during the day called "It IS What It Is."

As to it's meaning, well..... it is what it is!

I'll take the question seriously (I always do when it comes to words!): My guess would be a stoic acceptance of the situation, person, etc., as something you have to accept; to paraphrase "that girl," you have to take things as they are, because you can't really change them yourself.

My husband uses a similar phrase.
"Facts are facts". In other words, leave it alone, there is nothing you can do to change it.

It means:

I am a short guy and can you give me a booster seat to see over my stearing wheel.

Happy "too tall" The Man

I use that phrase even though I've never seen NASCAR in my life.

I'm with George though - to me it just means that things are as they are - at present. Maybe you can change it, maybe you can't, but this is where it is at this moment in time.

Also, to me it isn't about liking or disliking a situation - just observing.
